Premium Residency routes
Premium Residency is Saudi Arabia's self-sponsored long-stay route — the closest thing to a green card. Seven products, from a SAR 800,000 permanent tier to SAR 4,000 category applications. Here's how each fits.
Residency that isn't tied to an employer
For decades the choice for a foreigner in Saudi Arabia was binary: an employer-sponsored Iqama, or leave. Premium Residency (Iqama Mumayyazah), run by the Premium Residency Center, changed that. It gives a foreigner residency independent of any employer — you sponsor yourself, live and work freely, and sponsor your own family.
“Saudi Golden Visa” and “Green Card” are informal search terms, not official products — and Premium Residency does not lead to citizenship. It grants long-term residence rights only. Applications go through the official portal, pr.gov.sa.
Pay for access, or qualify on merit
The products split into two groups: financial-contribution tiers you simply pay for, and category-based routes with a low application fee but real eligibility criteria.

Fees and thresholds are set by the Premium Residency Center and change — confirm the current figures at pr.gov.sa before planning. An issuance fee and medical insurance also apply.

A workforce tool, not just a personal one
Premium Residency isn't only for the individual. For a company sitting close to its Saudization band, it's a retention and quota tool: a senior international hire on Premium Residency doesn't tighten your Nitaqat ratio the way a sponsored expat does, and the company sheds the administrative liability for that person's residency. For a senior hire, the cost is trivial against total compensation.
Beyond residency, the Entrepreneur product carries a Nitaqat exemption for the first three operational years and lets the founder nominate two key employees for their own Special Talent Residency — useful when you're building a team from a low base.
Where applicants get it wrong
Buying property isn't automatic
A SAR 4m+ residential, mortgage-free property may support eligibility — but you still submit a separate application and receive approval. Commercial, industrial, agricultural property and land don't qualify.
Replace a sold qualifying asset
If you sell the property that underpins a Real Estate Owner residency, it generally must be replaced within about 90 days.
General requirements still apply
Main applicants must be 21+, hold a clean criminal record, prove financial solvency, and pass a recent medical check.
Products, not a ladder
These are distinct products rather than a single upgrade path — confirm with the Center whether switching mid-stream is supported for your case.

What is Saudi Premium Residency?
A self-sponsored, long-term residence status independent of any employer, offered in seven official products through the Premium Residency Center (pr.gov.sa). It lets holders live, work, own property and sponsor family — but it isn't a route to citizenship.
How much does permanent residency cost?
The Unlimited Duration product has a one-time fee of SAR 800,000, with no ongoing obligations. The Limited Duration option is a renewable SAR 100,000 per year.
What's the lowest-cost route?
The five category-based products — Real Estate Owner, Investor, Entrepreneur, Special Talent and Gifted — each carry a flat SAR 4,000 application fee, far lower upfront than the contribution tiers. The trade-off is meeting specific asset, financial or professional criteria.
Does buying property grant residency?
Not automatically. Qualifying residential property worth SAR 4 million or more, mortgage-free, can support a Real Estate Owner application — but a separate application and approval are mandatory, and non-residential property doesn't qualify.
Why would an employer care about Premium Residency?
Because a senior hire on Premium Residency doesn't count against your Nitaqat ratio the way a sponsored expat does, and removes the residency admin. The Entrepreneur product also brings a three-year Nitaqat exemption and staff-nomination rights.
Match the person to the product
For senior talent, founders and investors — or for keeping them — Premium Residency is often cleaner than an employer Iqama: no sponsorship, better family rights, and a lighter Nitaqat footprint. The trick is matching the individual to the right one of the seven products before defaulting to a standard work visa.
